Artist Spotlight: Kamasi Washington
Meet Kamasi Washington, the sax genius who’s paving the way for jazz’s reintroduction to pop culture. Kamasi was a heavyweight on Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly” album, one of the most critically acclaimed records of 2015. While known for mixing jazz, hip-hop, funk, soul, swing, and gospel, Kamasi explained that he dislikes being labeled a “crossover artist” because, “music doesn’t really exist within boundaries like that…I don’t feel like I’ve really crossed over, more so than risen up.” It was his 2015 album “The Epic”, which features a 32-piece orchestra and a 20-person choir (whose parts he wrote and orchestrated over a five-year period) that solidified him as a prominent and renowned jazz musician of today. Check out a BBC interview with Kamasi and watch him discuss his music in anticipation for his TWO shows on Jam Cruise 15.
